Every year we are hit by advertising and public service announcements with some really scary numbers regarding how deadly the flu is. What are the facts behind the announcements? Influenza was recorded as the cause of death in only 1,100 cases in 2004, which is the most recent year for which the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) website has statistics. That’s a death rate of 4 people per 1 million. From 1979 to 2001 the average numbers of influenza deaths have ranged from 257 to 3,006 per year for the entire country.
