For two weeks Steve struggled with a profound depression, totally out of character for him. After getting an understanding of Informed Consent and getting the facts on his medication, he discussed it with his doctor. His doctor admitted that the asthma inhaler was causing these mental effects. He promptly got off of it and improved. Without this vital information, he said, he never would have suspected that a drug could do that to him, or that his doctor wouldn’t have warned him about such a serious side effect. “Informed Consent literally saved my life.”

Jean’s mother was waking up in the middle of the night and causing a ruckus in the nursing home. This was treated with a powerful sedative. She rapidly grew more disoriented and was about to be transferred to a higher level facility. Jean found out the right questions to ask about her mother’s drug regimen. The agitation was found to be a side effect of an antibiotic she was on temporarily. This was withdrawn, she settled down and sedatives were no longer needed. “Wow, a little bit of information (or lack of it) can make a world of difference.”

Margaret was treated for Parkinson’s disease with a new medication. Then she developed restless legs. The fact that this was a documented side effect of the medication was unknown to her and not mentioned by her doctor. So, she was prescribed a drug to treat the restless legs. That drug in turn gave her insomnia, which resulted in yet another prescription for a sleeping pill. After getting educated on Informed Consent and looking up the FactFiles™ she sorted through the drugs and their side effects. She got off of three drugs and was placed on an alternate Parkinson medication that didn’t have the side effects. “The situation was way out of control and I didn’t even know where to start. Now I know how to get the doctor to work with me to choose the right medicines.”
